ZING Go the Strings of Doug MacDonald’s Guitar on New CD

Good jazz – you know, that melodic, swingin’, creative, flawlessly executed, feel-good, ageless, fun-to-listen-to-music – is alive and well and escaping from the strings of jazz virtuoso Doug MacDonald’s guitar on his latest CD offering, Doug MacDonald’s ReORGANized Quartet (BluJazz Records).

The new CD is the culmination of a year’s work by MacDonald as composer and leader, realizing a goal to “write more for this ensemble and get it out there,” he said. The group features the guitarist along with Bobby Pierce on organ and vocals, Clarence Webb and Roger Neu-mann on tenor sax, and drummer/vocalist Harold Acey, offering new material as well as tunes that were delivered by the foursome in a 1997 recording called “Organizing.” MacDonald announced the revival of the organ quartet last year, referring to the revitalization of the original group as “re-organizing.”

Zan Stewart, of the Los Angeles Times, said, “MacDonald's charismatic manner... relentless pulse... elegant communicating…he soared rhythmically…with sleekly crafted phrases.” Scott Yanow, of LA Jazz Scene and Jazz Times, calls MacDonald a “ veteran guitarist who knows his influences cold, and consis-tently plays to his strong suit.”

Hip hop artist Archangel recently released his mixtape "Hallelujah M.U.S.I.C. (Classic Edition)." Coast 2 Coast presents the project, which is hosted by DJ Charlie White, in association with Ground Level Leaders/Prophecy Writings. It is now available for free download. "Hallelujah M.U.S.I.C" features Archangel on tracks with guest artist appearances from KI, Miscellaneous, LC, D-Jae, Jo'zzy, and Web. Production credits include Raw Heatz, 531 Music, Claws, Carmike, and Sinista, Web, and Trizz of The Machine.

Memphis artist Archangel is the first person out of his family to pursue music, and so he lists his influences as those people who make life a melody-everyone from your everyday construction worker with a jackhammer, to a vocal note from Marvin Gaye. This mixtape is the first of three in his "M.U.S.I.C." series. His goal with the "Classic Edition" is to bring to light a certain depth that he feels hip hop music is lacking. The second installment, "Hallelujah M.U.S.I.C. (Exclusive Edition)," will be released summer 2013 on itunes; and the final installment, "Hallelujah M.U.S.I.C. (Live Edition), will be hosted by Traps-N-Trunks and Dj Charlie White will be released soon after.

The acronym M.U.S.I.C. stands for "Man U Saw It Comin'," which is the title of Archangel's forthcoming album, set for release during the first quarter of 2014.
